Should You Paint Your Timber Door or Go with Varnish and Wood Stain?
December 14, 2018Doors have always been a decorative element in many cultures, and it is no wonder why doors are still valued today not only for their practical applications, but also for their aesthetics. Of all the materials currently available for the creation of doorways, wood has still held the most sway because of its overall popularity, availability, and the sheer variety of aesthetic versatility.
There is a wide assortment of options to choose from if you are contemplating on beautifying a wooden door. The three most common options are to paint it, varnish it, or stain it. Many people may find it difficult to choose their own desired step over the three common choices, but there is a quick way to help you decide which of the three you want to opt for:
Paint
Painting a door is easy. It offers quick and effective coverage and provides superior protection from the elements, and provides the following advantages:
- Superior coverage – perfect for those times when you are stuck with a door that is fashioned out of inferior wood, or one that doesn’t have as elegant a grain as you would desire. It is also ideal for doors that take the brunt of everyday weather, such as shed doors or even your typical entryway.
- Affordable – paint is affordable and can be easily obtained at any local home depot pr hardware store.
- Low-maintenance – painted doorways are lower maintenance and are perfect for all-weather conditions.
Stain
Staining a door can be a tad tricky. Not only is it difficult to maintain a stained door without running the risk of discolouration, and it requires a good quality door to make it work. If staining is your choice, consider the following:
- Timber quality – if your door boasts top-notch timber quality, stain away. If you’ve got it, flaunt it!
- Painstaking work – staining good wood requires a decent amount of effort on your part to provide a protective coat.
- Inferior protection and costly sum – for all its hard work, staining a doorway may look pretty, but it provides inferior protection from the elements and can be a tad costly, considering you’d need a high-quality doorway to start with.
Varnish
If you want the best of both worlds, you might want to opt for varnish. Not only is it able to show off the fine grain of a wooden doorway, but it also offers the following advantages:
- Affordability – shellac and many other types of natural and plastic varnishes are widely available and affordable.
- Multi-purpose – not only does it show off a door’s lovely grain, but it also provides a layer of water-proof coating that helps to keep your doorway protected against any type of weather.
